Julio Zarate, a former WBA interim 118-pound titlist, looks to make it five straight wins when he faces veteran Vernie Torres Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. The eight-round featherweight bout headlines the latest installment of Thompson Boxing’s “Path to Glory” series. Zarate, 32, defeated Hideki Todaka in Japan to capture the interim WBA bantamweight title in March 2004. After losing to Wladimir Sidorenko, the Mexico City native unsuccessfully challenged for the WBA 122-pound belt before rebounding with four straight wins. Torres is a tough vet who has only been stopped once in over 30 pro bouts. A native of Davao, Phillipines, Torres was once affiliated with Roy Jones’ team of fighters. Five other bouts are scheduled, including a scheduled six round light heavyweight contest featuring local up-and-comer Jesus Berrelleza (3-0). Tickets are still available.
