KO Video 7: A late-career highlight for Robin Krasniqi

Robin Krasniqi KO3 Dominic Boesel... Kosovo-born light heavyweight Robin Krasniqi got a late-career highlight in his 57th professional fight. In Magdeburg, Germany, a Krasniqi right hand put Dominic Boesel (30-2) down and out in round three, giving Krasniqi the IBO championship and the WBA interim title. Krasniqi took advantage of a blown call by the referee, who ruled that Boesel slipped when he was actually knocked down. Boesel should have gotten an eight-count to recover, but was pushed right back into action and Krasniqi flattened him. Krasniqi (51-6) has lost almost every time he's stepped up in class, but not this time.

Jose Zepeda KO5 Ivan Baranchyk... Here is a look at Jose Zepeda getting up from his fourth knockdown of the night and then putting Ivan Baranchyk to sleep in a crazy junior welterweight knockdown-fest on Saturday. There were eight official knockdowns in less than five rounds of boxing. Thankfully, Baranchyk's co-promoter Lou DiBella tweeted a photo of a smiling Banranchyk leaving the hospital on Sunday. DiBella also tweeted: "Leaving the hospital with our co-promoter, Tony Holden, is bruised but grateful warrior, Ivan ⁦Baranchyk⁩. Last night, he lost a brutal, unforgettable boxing match. Thankfully, he’s well enough to talk about, and appreciate, the fight of 2020 with family. God is good."

Baranchyk's other co-promoter, Holden posted this on Facebook: "Ivan is out of hospital and doing well, all he wanted was to go eat ice cream. Last night I was terrified as I rode in the ambulance with Ivan. worried that he was not going to be OK. I am proud of him, writers are calling this fight of the decade. It was a brutal war as Ivan put Zapeda on the canvas four times and Zapeda put Ivan on the canvas four times, all in the first five rounds. Ivan ended up walking into a punch resulting in a brutal knockout. I am just happy he is ok. I love this kid and he proved he is a world class fighter. Thanks to your prayers he is OK."

Light heavyweight contender on his KO of Eleider Alvarez: "I stopped a former world champion who's never been stopped before. And I proved that I can box very well, and still get the knockout. I watched tape of him and I seen if you give him pressure, he starts to lay back a little bit and get a little too comfortable and relaxed."

Boxingtalk's KO fix: Tua KO1 Ruiz

Boxingtalk's KO fix: Tua KO1 Ruiz

David Tua KO1 John Ruiz... On this date in 1996, on an HBO show entitled "Night the Young Heavyweights," New Zealand's David Tua destroyed John Ruiz in one round. The amazing thing about this KO is that it would be Ruiz, not Tua who would go on to win a heavyweight title. Tua lost a title shot to Lennox Lewis in 2000 while Ruiz would have multiple reigns as a WBA title holder with three fights vs. Evander Holyfield, two vs. Nikolay Valuev and single fights vs. Roy Jones, Hasim Rahman, James Toney, Andrew Golota and more. Tua had his last fight in 2013 and finished up at 52-5-2 while Ruiz fought one of the toughest schedules in heavyweight history until hanging them up in 2010 at 44-9-1.

Jimmy Peau a/k/a Jimmy Thunder, 1966-2020

Jimmy Peau a/k/a Jimmy Thunder, 1966-2020

Sad news out of New Zealand: Jimmy Peau, who fought under the name Jimmy Thunder, has died at the age of 54. Details of Thunder's death are unclear, but the New Zealand Herald reported he recently underwent brain surgery for a tumor. Reports also say that Thunder was homeless in his retirement years. Thunder was an exciting heavyweight who fought many times on USA Network's legendary Tuesday Night Fights series. As an amateur, he won gold at the Commonwealth Games, but somehow was left off the 1988 New Zealand Olympic team. Thunder's pro career stretched from 1989-2002. Although he wasn't a slick boxer, the heavily muscled Thunder always entertained and ususally had success. His resume is highlighted by wins over three former title holders,Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tubbs and Trevor Berbick. A 1994 majority decision win over Tubbs brought Thunder the IBO heavweight championship.  But Thunder is best remembered for his 1997 win over Crwaford Grimsely. Fighting on Tuesday Night Fights, Thunder stormed out of his corner at the opening bell and threw a single overhand right that immediately put Grimsley to sleep. A vidoe of the eight-second fight is included with this story.Briefly seen on the video is the wake of the KO- it came so fast that while laying flat on his back, Grimsley thought the fight was still going on and threw some punches while he was laying on the canvas. Boxingtalk sends it deepest condolences to the friends and family of Jimmy Peau a/k/a Jimmy Thunder, a man who provided boxing fans with many thrills throught the 1990s.

Jermall Charlo KO's Dennis Hogan

Jermall Charlo KO's Dennis Hogan
Jermall Charlo KO7 Dennis Hogan WBC regular middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) stopped Australian-based Irishman Dennis Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs) with a one-punch knockout in the seventh round Saturday night live at Barclays Center in Brookyn, New York. Houston’s Charlo delivered on his promise that he would close the show in spectacular fashion after going the distance in his previous two bouts. At :28 of round number seven, Charlo set Hogan up by feinting on the jab before connecting on a ferocious left hook to Hogan’s nose that sent him falling against the ropes. The 34-year-old Hogan, who was moving up after most recently challenging for the title at 154 pounds [Hogan should have won the WBO title but got robbed by the judges against Jaime Munguia], rose to his feet before the ten count, but referee Charlie Fitch waived off the bout.

When Hogan was dropped in the seventh round, it was the third time in his career that he had been down and the second time during the fight. In the third round, a left uppercut from Charlo just 12 seconds into the frame sent Hogan rolling backwards onto the canvas, but the Irishman rose quickly and acrobatically to his feet.

Despite throwing far fewer punches, Charlo had the more effective and efficient attack. Charlo landed 86 of the 266 punches he threw (32%) while Hogan landed just 71 of the 418 punches he threw (17%). Despite Hogan landing on 61 power punches compared to 57 for Charlo, Hogan was unable to hurt Charlo, while Charlo’s trademark power resulted in another highlight reel stoppage.

“I made it through 2019 and we’re going to 2020 with 20/20 vision,” said Charlo in the ring following the fight. “Shout out to Dennis Hogan for giving me real competition and for coming up to fight me. Of course my power prevailed tonight.  We’ve been working on that (the uppercut). I try to take him out with every punch and we work hard for it.  He got up and he fought like a champion. Ronnie (Shields) told me to cut him off. I just threw the shot and I made sure I threw it right on the money.

“The middleweight division is wide open. I’m the WBC champion [Editor's note: world middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is the WBC franchise champion, Charlo's belt is secondary] . I’m going to enjoy this and spend time with my team. I’m here to fight whoever.  You have to make the right decisions and do it at the right time. That’s what it’s all about.” source: showtime

“I wanted to keep going but the decision was fair enough by the referee,” said Hogan. “I didn't see the punch coming on the second knockdown. I was trying to keep boxing him but then all of a sudden I was on the ground and the fight was over.

“I'm looking forward to spending the Christmas holiday with my family, taking a month off, and then we'll work on what's next for me.”

Ruiz weigh-in shocker!

Ruiz weigh-in shocker!

The weigh-in for Saturday's heavyweight title fight is over and there was a shocker... WBO/WBA/IBF heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz weighed in for his first tile defense at a startling 283.7 pounds!  That is about 15 pounds more than he weighed in June when he captured the championships from Anthony Joshua, and Ruiz, took that fight on short notice and wasn't exactly slim at 268. Note: Ruiz stepped on the scale wearing long pants, a tank top and sneakers but did not appear to be hiding any weights in his pocket (a possible mind game). Joshua, the former champion, weighed in at 237.5, about ten pounds lighter than he weighed in June. The closest historical precedent for Ruiz's shocking weight gain is James "Buster" Douglas in 1990. Like Ruiz, Douglas had a beefy body type, but Douglas trimmed down to 231 for the chance of a lifetime against world champion Mike Tyson. Douglas and Ruiz both pulled huge upsets, but for his first defense, Douglas could not discipline himself in the same way, and also weighed in 15 pounds heavier for Evander Holyfield.  Douglas wound up getting knocked out by Holyfield in the third round and his career was never the same. Will Ruiz suffer the same fate?
