Yo Sam Choi dies from Ring Injuries

Former world junior flyweight champion Yo Sam Choi of South Korea has been pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in a boxing match on December 25th of last year. Choi won a decision over Heri Amol of Indonesia in the fateful bout, but collapsed in the ring immediately afterwards. He was being sustained on life support, but his organs began to fail and Choi's family decided to disconnect him from the machines that were keeping him alive. Choi leaves the world a champion in life as well as death, as his organs were dontaed to save the lives of others. In the ring, Choi reached a level of success rarely attained by Korean boxers. In 1999, he beame the true 108-pound world champion by defeating Saman Sorjutarong in Seoul, South Korea (Sorjutarong acquired the world championship from Humberto Gonzalez after Gonzalez's famed trilogy with Michael Carbajal). He helf the title for about a year and a half, when Jorge Arce stopped him. Choi moved up to 112 and lost a title bid to Lorenzo Parra. His career mark is 32-5, and Korean sources say he is the fifth Korean boxer to die from injuries sustained in the ring. Boxingtalk sends its condolences to the friends and family of Choi. source: donga.com
