Women's boxing headlines in Indiana

Edited Press Release: "Merciless" Mary McGee (7-0, 4 KOs) and Rita "La Guera" Figueroa (9-0, 3 KOs) are locked in a war of words as they prepare for their November 17, 2006  junior welterweight  match-up at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville, Indiana.  The fight marks the first time in Northwest Indiana, a region long known for its rich boxing heritage, women have fought for a title in a  main  event. Jack “Kid” Callahan, of  co-promoter One In A Million Inc.  said, "Rita and Mary met in the amateurs, and Rita came out on top, but now they're professional fighters. This is about taking control in the women’s ranks, which have become so much more competitive over the years."  Figueroa now owns a regional title that will be on the line, but McGee promised to avenge her lost and more to Figueroa."I've trained and fought too hard to let her stand in my way, and I will knock her out to prove it," McGee said. "I know Mary’s been talking a lot of smack lately about knocking me out, but far better people have tried and failed," Figueroa countered. "Let’s see what she has in the ring."  Also on the card is defending Indiana State  middleweight  champion Jimmy "The Fighting’ Schoolteacher" Holmes (14-0-1 with 7 KOs and a draw against 200-bout loser Reggie Strickland) will face Brooke "Schoolboy" Wellby (32-16, 10 KOs) of Canada after the bout had to be canceled earlier this year. Veteran  light  welterweight Ruben “Modern Day Warrior” Galvan (26-10, 9 KOs) will be returning to the ring on this card , as will Michael "The Midnight Stalker" Walker (14-0, 8 KOs).  Tickets for “Night of Champions” are on sale now at the Star Plaza Box Office (219-769-6600) or through any Ticket Master (312-559-1212) or  through ticketmaster.
