Wladimir Klitschko pleased with showing against Brewster

Wladimir had the expression of a person, who completed an enormous work and was pleased that it’s finally over. He was like a soldier returning from a long battle. The later comparison maybe a bit too much, but it’s partially true.
Wladimir was finally able to put an end to one of his darkest moments in his professional career. As of Today, he can’t be looked down on for what happened on April 10th, 2004. He proved himself and now there is no need to go back into the past.

We met up with Wladimir at his room inside the Hyatt Regency hotel. It turned into a media room with non-stop calls from various news and media organizations requesting interviews as well as comments about the outcome. Finally Wladimir was able to find time.

Wladimir, you still have to do a detailed analysis of the fight. However, from what you could tell, what do you think about this fight? Are you happy with the way it ended?
My main goal in this fight was to simply win. There was no room for a loss. I put a lot on the line in this fight. I am happy with my victory. The fight itself…well you could say it didn’t change much from the first round, as I used my tactics to control the fight and my opponent. I didn’t take any unnecessary risks. You have to understand that Lamon is a very dangerous fighter. So I used my jab and a left hook, from a distance.

Is it possible to say that you did just enough to win this fight? They say a boxer fights the way his opponent lets him. So I managed to impose my style onto Brewster in the first few minutes of the fight. This allowed me to control the fight from there on. Could I have done more?
Sometimes when you try to do too much, you end up harming only yourself. I chose my tactics and used them in this fight. My goal was to win – and I accomplished it. I think there will be few who would doubt my victory.

Wladimir, many boxing fans regret that they didn’t get to see a knockout…
I can only say that if Lamon’s trainer, Buddy McGirt, didn’t stop the fight in the seventh or the eight round Brewster would have ended up on the scaffold of the ring…
I can understand that boxing fans wanted to see a knockout win. But you have to understand also that if the fight continued I would have caused a lot of damage to Brewster’s body. I have no right to condemn or judge their decision to stop the fight.

Well, it seems you already caused a lot of damage to Brewster in the first six rounds. It seems you also injured your left hand…is it serious?
Injuries, unfortunately, are part of the professional career. As you could see, based on Lamon’s injuries, Buddy McGirt made the right decision to stop the fight.
As far as my injury, I can tell that in my professional career I have had fights after which my hands swelled up and needed minor attention. So it’s nothing new this time.

Wladimir, Buddy McGirt, told Brewster that it’s over. He didn’t want you to knock him out in the seventh round. Were you ready to finish this fight in the seventh round?
I was ready to fight all twelve rounds. But already in the third round I could see that my punches had a devastating effect on Lamon. He became weaker and weaker each round. I was able to land more and more punches, therefore sooner or later I would have ended it by a knockout. It could have been in the seventh or the eight round.

Wladimir, you aren’t disappointed by the fact that you couldn’t end this fight by a knockout?
I have no disappointments. I finished the fight as a winner.

Wladimir, some experts already are talking that there is no comparison between your second fight and your first fight. After over a year of being inactive they think Lamon wasn’t at his peak. What do you think?
I just want to remind that in our first fight, Lamon was also inactive for a year, which is practically identical to current the circumstances.

Wladimir, what can you tell us about your future fight?
I hope that my team will be able to start negotiations with one of the champions. But you must understand it’s quite difficult. I hope it happens.
Right now I don’t know when or with whom I will carry out my next fight.

Wladimir, your fight with Lamon was a voluntary defense of the IBF title. Are you going to be forced to carry out a mandatory defense?
From our side it was a voluntary defense, but we received a sanction from the IBF for this to be a mandatory defense since Brewster was the highest available contender in the IBF rankings.

Therefore you will have no obligation to the IBF and can pick your own opponent?
Yes, I have full freedom to choose my opponent in the next fight.

Wladimir are you going to take a longer pause or the same as before this fight?
It all depends on our negotiations and how quick and effective they will be.

And what will Wladimir Klitschko do with his spare time?
I want to rest a little bit. I want to take pleasure not only in boxing but also in my life.

Are you going to kite surf?
Quite possible. Who knows maybe even marry a second time….

Wladimir, since it was Emanuel’s birthday, what did you give him for his gift?
Well of course his biggest gift was my victory. But I also got him something else.

Wladimir, on behalf of your fans we would like to congratulate you.
I also want to thank everyone for their support in this fight and my previous fights. Without you my victories wouldn’t bring as much pleasure to me. You keep me focused and determined to win. Thank you.
