Two-time Olympic gold medalist and multi-division world champion Claressa Shields will move up in weight yet again to challenge WBC heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on July 27th. [The WBC considers 175+ pounds to be the start of the heavyweight division for women]. Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) and Lepage-Joanisse (7-1, 2 KOs) of Quebec will headline at Detroit, Michigan’s Little Caesars Arena, where nearly 12,000 fans watched Shileds, from Flint, Michigan defend the undisputed world middleweight title against Maricela Cornejo a year ago. Shields won gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, making her the first female boxer from the United States to win consecutive Olympic medals. She has also been a pro junior middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight champion, showing her great quality and superiority in each of these divisions. Lepage-Joanisse comes into this fight having been crowned WBC heavyweight champion by defeating Argentina’s Abril Vidal by decision in March.
