Puerto Rican power puncher Subriel Matías will defend the WBC junior welterweight title against Britain’s Dalton Smith in Brooklyn today (Sautrday). Matías weighed in at the division limit of 140 pounds. Smith came in at 139.6. Matías is known for his aggressive style and relentless pressure. He owns a record of 23 wins, 22 of them by knockout, with only two defeats. This is Matias' second title reign. He won the vacant IBF belt in 2023, defeating Jermeias Nicoolas Ponce. Following one successful title defense, Matías lost that belt, but in July of last year he returned to the top by defeating then-champion Alberto Puello via majority decision, capturing the WBC title. This fight marks the first defense of his new reign. In March 2024, Smith took a major step forward in his career by stopping José Zepeda. He followed up in 2025 with a win against Mathieu Germain. Now, Smith will challenge for a world title for the first time, arriving undefeated with a record of 18-0 and 13 knockouts.
