Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC wrote: "The WBC has ordered the mandatory title defense of our lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson [to face] William Zepeda. [I am] very much looking forward to this great match." The undefeated Stevenson (pictured) defeated Artem Harutyunyan ten days ago in the first defense of the vacant title he won last November.  The also-undefeated Zepeda fought on the same day, besting Giovanni Cabrera.
