WBC president Mauricio Suliaman announced yesterday that Deontay Wilder can make a voluntary defense of his WBC heavyweight title “as reasonably soon as possible.” Wilder was previously required to make his mandatory defense against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin on May 21, 2016, and Wilder was prepared to go through with the risky fight. However, on May 13th, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) reported that Povetkin testred positive for Meldonium, which became a banned substance on January 1, 2016. On May 15, 2016, the WBC issued a ruling that the fight would not take place as scheduled. The WBC says it conducting an in-depth investigation and evaluation of the situation and further rulings will be forthcoming
