WBC calls for heavyweight sit-down next week

Representatives of Maskaev, Peter and V. Klitschko summoned to Mexico

According to the WBC website, the WBC has called for compulsory mediation among Oleg Maskaev, Vitali Klitschko and Sam Peter in order to resolve the dispute over who gets the next shot at Maskaev. Sources tell Boxingtalk that the mediation will take place in Mexico City on Monday.  Maskaev, who won the title last year from Hasim Rahman, wants to fight Klitschko. The elder brother of IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali retired as WBC champion but was named "champion emeritus", a designation that allows him an immediate title shot under WBC rules. Peter is the mandatory contender after defeating James Toney and believes he is entitled to fight Maskaev next.  Compulsory mediation is a process in which a neutral mediator, selected by the parties, assists in conducting negotiations to settle the dispute. With Peter's representatives threatening lawsuits, the WBC says  it has not yet sanctioned a bout between Maskaev and Klitschko, and it has issued a release stating, "contrary to certain reports, the WBC has not issued any order in this regard, finding itself between competing claims."  If the mediation is unsuccessful, the WBC will send the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to determine the rights of the boxers.
