WBC rates Trinidad #1

The WBC has issued new ratings from its convention in Phuket, Thailand, and the biggest news is that Felix Trinidad has been installed as the number one contender at middleweight.  Trinidad stopped Ricardo Mayorga and is now rated just above Howard Eastman, who is coming off a decision win over Jerry Elliott.  The rating facilitates a rematch between Trinidad and Hopkins, who knocked out the Puerto Rican superstar in their 2001 unification bout.  Hopkins has always embraced fighting his mandatories, and neither man has shied away from difficult fights, but there are still some major issues that need to be resolved before a rematch can be made, most notably Hopkins' relationship with Don King.  King currently promotes Trinidad and promoted Hopkins from 2001-2003.  Also in the WBC ratings, Oscar De La Hoya is now the number one contender at 154 pounds, ahead of Kofi Jantuah. The most indefensible WBC rating comes at heavyweight where Juan Carlos Gomez is rated eighth, ahead of sixteenth rated Yamplier Azcuy. In their last bout, Azcuy stopped Gomez inside one round.Â
