French super featherweight Elhem Mekhaled says she has signed to challenge Alycia Baumgardner on February 4th at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mekhaled is coming off a loss to Delfine Persoon, so it can be assumed Persoon would have been a more deserving challenger. Baumgardner (13-1) holds the IBF, WBO and WBC championships and is coming of her signature win, a split decision over Mikaela Mayer in October. As revelaed on its website, the WBA has demoted Hyun Mi Choi to champion in recess, and the vacant title, altough a paper one, will apparently be on the line for Baumgardner vs. Mekhaled. Choi just fought in October, defeating a soft challenger, Melanie Bradford.
Mekhaled said on social media, "I'm In! After so much journey and sacrifice, I'm going to [have] the fight of my life. Magical moment for me and my team. Those who know me, know how hard headed and determined I am. I'm looking forward to getting in the ring [on] Saturday, February 4th in Madison Square Garden in New York, facing the American champion and making French history. [I'm going] back to France as world united champion, I plan to do it! I'm counting on your support. It is time to shine!"
