new regular lightweight champ on the way?
Press Release: The WBA announced it will present their longtime lightweight champion Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz with a super champion belt at the Boxing Writers Association of America’s 82nd Annual Awards Dinner at the Copacabana in New York on Friday. BWAA President Tim Graham also plans to have Diaz present an award at the event. The undefeated Diaz (32-0, 16 KOs), from Houston, became one of the youngest world champions in boxing history when he won the WBA crown in 2004 at age 20. He became a unified champion on April 28 by capturing the WBO title by stopping Brazilian great Acelino “Popo” Freitas after eight rounds at Foxwoods Resort Casino. To his credit and at the urging of his parents and his manager, Diaz remains a student at the University of Houston-Downtown where he is a junior pre-law major.
