Former two-division champion Jermall Charlo will not take part in his comeback bout, scheduled for next weekend in Australia. Charlo posted on social media, "Unfortunately, I will not be able to fight next Saturday. I’ve been training nonstop for the last three months and was ready to make a statement. I want to apologize to all my fans and let them know I will keep training and be back on a PBC event very soon." Charlo appeared to blame the problem on his inability to obtain a visa to enter Australia. He was booked to fight on Saturday, July 25th (U.S. date) at Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia in support of a main event between former unified welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. and Australia's former junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu. The still-undefeated Jermall Charlo was going to face Australia’s Koen Mazoudier in a ten-round super middleweight battle, 

 

A former champion at 154 and 160 pounds, Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) is hoping to become a three-division champion, this time in the 168-pound division. He's had one fight in the division, a May 2025 returned from a lengthy layoff to stop veteran Thomas LaManna in six rounds. A native of Houston, Charlo first joined the ranks of world champion in 2015 with a knockout of Cornelius Bundrage, and would go on to defend the title three times, including a stoppage of then-undefeated Julian Williams in December 2016. Trained throughout his career by the renowned Ronnie Shields, Charlo would then begin a middleweight run that saw him earn the WBC championship and add victories over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Matt Korobov, Hugo Centeno Jr. and more.

 

The visa denial may have been related to a 2024 drunk driving incident. Charlo lost recognition as WBC middleweight champion after being arrested in March of that year in Pearland, Texas. He was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of at least 0.15 and fleeing the scene of a crime after an autonobile collision involving damage to another vehicle. Charlo had not defended his title since 2021, missing opportunities for a huge fight vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. TMZ.com provided additional details, which is that Charlo crashed his Lamborghini and was eventually arrested after leaving the scene. TMZ also reports that police recorded signs of Charlo's intoxication.
