Robert Townsend to Direct

Ving Rhames will star as the controversial former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston in the “Phantom Punch” which will be directed by Hollywood cult figure Robert Townsend.  The film will chronicle Liston’s rise to fame and the “Phantom Punch” at the hands of Muhammad Ali.  Liston was one of boxing’s most tragic figures, having ties to the mob and serious questions about his integrity, and most likely over dosing on drugs in what many believe was a mysterious death in 1971.  Although his body was found and reported on January 5th 1971, his death is believed to have possibly happened on December 30th or 31st of 1970.  In this writers opinion, the “Phantom Punch” is a complete myth.  If you watch the replay in slow motion, you can clearly see Liston getting cracked with a big right at the hands of Ali.  Source: Hollywood Reporter
