Nicolay Valuev has defeated John Ruiz by majority decision in Berlin, Germany to capture the WBA heavyweight title. Although Boxingtalk has not yet reviewed a tape of the fight, the official scores were 114-114, 116-113 and a very unusual 116-114. A score of 116-114 means at least two rounds were scored even. Had that judge scored the two rounds for Ruiz instead of a disfavored even score, he would have retained the title. According to the Associated Press, the crowd booed the decision. Ruiz outweighed by 85 pounds and "appeared to have the fight in hand" during the early rounds according to the Associated Press, but Valuev landed the best punch of the fight in the last round, wobbling the former title holder. Valuev is now 43-0, while Ruiz is 42-6-1. Boxingtalk is fairly certain that Ruiz manager Norman Stone will have some interesting comments in the days to come.
