UFC welterweight champion injures back

MMA News

A back injury to UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra has caused him to pull out of his December 29, 2007 title defense against Matt Hughes. The injury, a herniated disc, means Serra's first title defense will be delayed. He claimed the UFC championship from Georges St. Pierre in April. St. Pierre won the title from Hughes.  Serra-Hughes was scheduled for UFC 79 in Las Vegas. The card will go on, headlined by Chuck Liddell against Wanderlei Silva. UFC will decide whether Hughes will fight a new opponent or will wait for Serra to  recover.
