U.S. Olympic Trials Report- Day 1

Gary Russell, Jr. upset; Warren, Yanez, Jacobs win opening bouts

Day 1: The first day of the U.S. Olympic trials featured an upset, as bantamweight favorite Gary Russell, Jr. was narrowly defeated by Roberto Marroquin by a score of 18-17. It was not only an upset but a comeback, as Marroquin trailed 8-2 after the first round. The double-elimination format provides Russell, a 2005 World Championship bronze medal winner, with one last opportunity to make the Olympic team, but he cannot lose again. Meanwhile, Rau'shee Warren moved forward in his bid to become a two-time Olympian by dominating Juan Leija. The flyweight bout was stopped with Warren ahead by a score of 23-3.  In the middleweight division, Danny Jacobs (who is profiled by Boxingtalk's Socrates Palmer below) avenged a previous loss to Shawn Porter, 30-18. Jacobs is now 131-5 in the unpaid ranks. Meanwhile, in the light flyweight division, Pan American gold medalist Luis Yanez stayed on track for a trip to the Beijing Olympics with a 27-12 win over Malcolm Franklin. source: usa boxing
