David Tua KO7 Maurice Wheeler... In the Gotham Boxing main event in New York City, heavyweight contender David Tua took out late substitute Maurice Wheeler in the seventh round. Wheeler was the fourth opponent for Tua and was just signed to fight in the last two days, so he didn't have much time to train. It showed. Wheeler fared well for a couple of rounds, but Tua fought intelligently, gradually wearing Wheeler down with a body attack. A body blow drove Wheeler into the ropes, putting him down for the ten count. Tua, 46-4-1, has now won four straight since a two-year layoff from 2003-2005, and remains a marketable heavyweight opponent. Wheeler drops to 10-9-1 but acquitted himself reasonably under the circumstances. source for all results: Kurt Emhoff @ ringside
Joe Greene TKO7 Edison Aguirre... It took seven knockdowns in less than five rounds to end the fight, but New York prospect "Mean" Joe Greene got his thirteenth win in as many pro outings. Aguirre excited the crowd by jumping up enthusiastically after most of the knockdowns, but it was a one-side middleweight encounter. Aguirre drops to 11-5-1 almost exactly one year to the day since his last bout, a stoppage loss, also in New York City.
Jorge Teron W6 Marcus Luck... In his second time around against Marcus Luck, Jorge Teron was knocked down twice in a six-round bout but escaped with a unanimous decision. Teron was down in the first and third, and was hit particularly hard the first time. In between, Teron scored a knockdown of his own in round two. If it wasn't for bad luck, Marcus would have had no Luck at all, because when the scorecards were read, it was Teron who prevailed by tallies of 56-55 (twice) and a head-scratching 57-54, all for the native New Yorker. The junior welterweight bout, which took place on the Gotham Boxing show in New York City, was a rematch of a 2005 bout that was won by Teron in three rounds. Teron is now 13-0-1 while Luck is 7-12-1.Â
Peter Quillin TKO1 David Estrada... On the same show, Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin defeated David Estrada in less than a round. Quillin, whose record is perfect after eight pro fights, registered two knockdowns in the first round before the middleweight bout was called to a halt. Estrada should not be confused with another, better-known David Estrada, who has boxed Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron. This David Estrada dropped to 10-10.
Jose Nieves W8 Alejando Nieves... Bantamweight propsect Jose Nieves improved to 16-0-2 with an uneventful eight-round decision over Alejandro Moreno, 21-20-3. Nieves pitched a shutout, sweeping the three official scorecards by 80-72.
