Spinks willing to vacate IBF strap for Trinidad fight!
It should be no surprise to Boxingtalk readers that IBF junior middleweight champion Cory "The Next Generation" Spinks is extremely interested in luring Puerto Rican living legend Felix "Tito" Trinidad out of retirement. In a recent interview on Boxingtalk, Spinks stated that he would fight Trinidad at 160 pounds once he fulfilled his mandatory obligation with Rodney Jones. However, in a surprising turn of events, Spinks is now telling BT that he would be willing to vacate his junior middleweight championship to face Trinidad as soon as possible. After speaking with Spinks, Boxingtalk.com contacted Don Felix Trinidad Sr., Tito's father, trainer, and manager. Papa Trinidad described a Trinidad-Spinks fight as "very interesting" and later added, it's clear that De La Hoya is a coward with no intentions of fighting Tito. We have said that Tito is retired and he will not come back unless it's for the De La Hoya rematch. But Spinks is a well respected boxer and this is something that we will consider, but I will have to talk with Tito about it." Okey dokey, when? "Tito isn't around at this moment, but I will speak with him in the next couple of days to discuss this. It's clear that Cory Spinks wants to fight the best and we respect him for recognizing that Oscar is and has been running away from the Tito rematch. After I speak with Tito, we will see what his decision is and then if there's something to move forward with, at that point we will contact Don King." More to follow.
