In the words of the legendary Freddie Roach, “I’m no miracle worker, I get James Toney in shape, point him in the right direction, and he does the rest.” That by itself could land Roach in Canastota some day. It was not long ago that many wrote Toney off as a waste of talent and a fighter not living up to his potential. Roach changed all that, and Toney is now on any respectable boxing fan’s pound-for-pound list. BoxingTalk own’s Darren Nichols recently traveled to Roach’s Wild Card Gym to speak with him about his fighter’s bout on September 23rd with the undefeated Rydell Booker, what Toney is doing to ensure victory, and what this fight mean for Lights Out’s future. Roach also divulges information for the first time that BoxingTalk is aware of about who he would train if Toney and Roach’s other client, Iron Mike Tyson were to ever face each other. Roach is a class act, one of the good guys in the sport, and BoxingTalk was privileged to speak with him about one of boxing’s most talented and exciting fighters.
