Top p4p amateur goes AWOL in Brazil

Could Cuban star be following his 2004 teammate's footsteps?

Guillermo Rigondeaux, perhaps the best pound-for-pound amateur boxer in the world, failed to show up for a weigh-in at the Pan Am games in Brazil, fueling speculation that he is trying to defect Cuba and turn pro. According to the Associated Press, Rigondeaux and teammate Erislandy Lara left the athtlete's village and have not returned. Details were still scanty, but but its safe to say an attempted defection is highly likely. Rigondeaux won gold medals in the bantamweight division in both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. His most recognizable victory to American fans is a 2000 Olympic win over Clarence Vinson.  The Cuban boxing program is already reeling from the recent defections of a trio of Olympians, Yan Barthelemy, Yuriolski Gamboa and Odlanier Solis, who now fight professionally in Germany. -Scott Shaffer
