Tontcho Tontchev to take on John Fewkes

Press Release: Britain's John Fewkes will step his career up a gear against Tontcho Tontchev (37-5 with 21 KOs) at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England on July 13, 2007. Fewkes, (14-0 with 2 KOs), has been taken along slowly but his manager Glyn Rhodes believes Tontchev is an ideal opponent. [Editor's note: Tontchev lost to Oscar De La Hoya in the 1992 Olympics but defeated Terrence Cauthen in the '96 games where he earned a silver medal]. “Boxing is all about taking chances,” Rhodes said. “The one thing you can’t buy is experience. Sooner or later I have to let him off the leash and see how good he is. We have to see what he can do at world level. This is a good learning step-up fight. Tontchev would be a great scalp for John to have on his record but to get beaten by such an experienced fighter would be no big deal. At this stage of John’s career he is exactly the sort of opponent he wants as Tontchev knows all of the tricks. In John’s last two bouts against Scott Haywood and Craig Watson, he found it all too easy and there was a little bit of complacency." Tickets are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling 0871 226 1508. The fight is also televised live on Sky TV.
