Tommy Morrison wants to come back

Former heavyweight star Tommy Morrison is talking about making a comeback despite the fact that he is HIV positive. Morrison, who held the WBO heavyweight title in the 1990s but was never a legitimate world champion, told a newpaper that he intends to fight before the year is out. Now 37 years old, he appears to be in denial about his HIV status. “I’m convinced it was a false positive,” said Morrison to the Kansas City Star. “I’ve never had any signs. The only thing that’s changed in my life is I have too much time on my hands.” Morrison, 46-3-1, last fought in 1996 when he defeated Marcus Rhode, who took the fight knowing of Morrison's health status. Rhode, however, has been known not to give his best efforts to get up from knockdowns and it would seem unlikely that a top heavyweight would want to risk contracting HIV through Morrison's blood, a risk that would be unlikely but cannot be discounted in boxing.  And then there is the problem of getting licensed, so Morrison has a long way to go before acheiving his dreamof boxing professionally again. -Scott Shaffer
