Tommy Morrison bout cancelled

Proof of passed medical test doesn't arrive

After ten years away from boxing, Tommy Morrison (47-3-1, 41 KO’s) was to have his second comeback bout on the undercard of the Top Rank Promotions boxing card in Houston Frida. In 1996, Morrison tested positive for HIV and retired from boxing at age 26.  A decade later, he says he has now tested negative many times and resumed his career with a win in West Virginia. Morrison arrived in Houston early in the week to comply with the Texas State Boxing Commission licensing requirements, which seem to be more stringent than West Virginia.  Morrison submitted blood samples for Hepatitis B & C and HIV testing. Wanting to assure his and others safety, both Morrison’s manager and the Texas commission desired a more detailed set of testing than normally done for a boxing license. The results didn't arrive in time, leaving one to draw his own conclusions. Boxing commissioner Dickie Cole said, “We did not receive the required paperwork in time in order to license Morrison.  At the weigh-in we gave him a tentative license pending the completion of his medical paperwork.  Without it, we can’t allow him to fight.” An expedited turn around time was requested for the blood test.  However due to the complexity of the tests the results were delayed and a license could not be issued.
