Tokuyama relinquishes WBC 115-pound title

Unclear if he will campaign at 118 or retire

Edited Press Release: WBC super flyweight champ Masamori Tokuyama officially renounced his belt through the Japan Boxing Commission. Now in his second title reign, the Japanese champion of North Korean descent kept his throne by outscoring uncrowned champion Jose Navarro last February, and hasn’t fought since for some ten months. He will move up to the bantam category, where he hopes for a shot at the WBC 118-pound belt against Japan’s Hozumi Hasegawa, who, however, seems reluctant to face Tokuyama in a voluntary defense. If so, Tokuyama has indicated he might retire, so it remains to be seen whether or not he will go on fighting until he becomes the WBC’s official challenger for Hasegawa.
