The Sweet Science Invades St. Paul Tonight!

Brunette Boxing returns tonight with the fifth installment of the Ballroom Blitz boxing series from the RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota. The show features three bouts televised by Fox Sports North. The main event is a battle of local welterweights, as undefeated Jose Leo Moreno faces off with Mohammed Kayongo. It’ll be Moreno’s first appearance in the ballroom, while Kayongo, a veteran, has won there twice. Kayongo, 12-1-1 (9 KOs), hails from Uganda and is considered one of the best prospects to come out of Africa in recent years.

After compiling an amateur record of 127-9, including a win over current IBF champion Kassim Ouma and a silver medal at the 2002 British Commonwealth games, Kayongo turned pro at the age of 22 and left Uganda to train at St. Paul’s Brunette Boxing Gym. Moreno, 11-0 (9 KOs), is fan favorite as a volume puncher that wears opponents down by constantly coming forward and unloading a non-stop offensive arsenal. Moreno is considered by most Minnesota fight fans as one of the best, if not the best fighter in the state today. Rumor has it the winner will receive a date on Showtime's ShoBox series.  The co-feature will be a showdown of regional light heavyweights, when Marty "Wolfman" Lindquist meets Illinois’s Ted Muller in a scheduled eight rounder. After starting his career 15-0-1, Muller has lost three straight, the first coming to well traveled, Anthony Ivory. Lindquist, 11-4 (9 KOs), has rebounded well since losing to Zach Walters last September, scoring a second round stoppage in early 2005.

Three more St. Paul fighters will be on the non-televised undercard. Brad Laffin, 4-1 (4 KOs), faces Colorado’s Jose Beltran in a four-round heavyweight bout; local high school principal Ben Lane, 2-0 (2 KOs), goes against debuting Jeremy Kirshner in a four-round light middleweight contest and light heavyweight Matt O’Hara will return after nearly five years of inactivity.
