The Boxingtalk Scoreboard: Las Vegas Undercard Results

Abraham Nova W10 Avery Sparrow... In the ESPN co-feature in Las Vegas, hard-punching Abraham Nova had trouble with the slick-boxing Avery Sparrow in the early rounds, but came on strong at the end to win their junior lightweight bout by unanimous decision. Sparrow slowed down as the fight went on, allowing Nova to land more frequently. Nova, a Puerto Rican based in Albany, New York, hurt Sparrow in round eight and took the bout by scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94. Compubox also favored Nova, tallying 112 punches landed to Sparrow's 60. He's now 19-0, while Sparrow heads back to Philadelphia at 10-2. source: espn

UNDERCARD

Featherweight Orlando Gonzalez (15-0, 10 KOs) scored a pair of knockdowns, but Luis Porozo (15-3, 8 KOs) made him work for all eight rounds. Gonzalez ultimately prevailed via unanimous decisions by scores 76-74 and 77-73 (twice), as the knockdowns in the second and seventh rounds sealed Porozo's fate... Welterweights Vlad Panin (8-1, 4 KOs) and Benjamin Whitaker (13-4, 3 KOs) fought a close one for six rounds, but Panin received the majority decision nod by scores of 57-57 and 58-56 (twice)... In a six-round welterweight battle, Reymond Yanong (11-5-1, 9 KOs) outpointed Clay "3rd Degree" Burns (9-8-2 4 KOs) via split decision. Yanong closed the fight strong and is back in the win column after being knocked out in his last fight... Kingsley Ibeh (4-1, 4 KOs) knocked out Waldo Cortes (5-3, 2 KOs) in the fourth round of a heavyweight rumble. It was a rematch of a 2019 bout that Cortes won via split decision. source: top rank press release

Joshua Franco W12 Andrew Moloney... According to the oddsmakers, it was an upset, but Joshua "The Professor" Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) was not surprised. Franco dealt Australia's Andrew Moloney his first pro loss via unanimous, punishing decision. Official scores were 115-112 and 114-113 (twice). Franco dominated down the stretch, cut Moloney in round ten, knocked him down in the eleventh and swept the twelfth on all three judges' cards. It turned out Franco needed that last round to secure the decision. With the impressive win, Franco also secures a paper title in the super flyweight division, the WBA regular title [Roman Gonzalez holds the full WBA title in the weight division]. “After the fourth round, I gained the momentum and figured him out. I always knew this was possible," Franco said. “I wasn’t nervous when the decision was being read. I knew I’d done enough to win this fight. My coach, Robert Garcia, had me ready.” Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs), from Melbourne Australia, was making his American debut. “It just wasn’t my night tonight," Moloney said. "This was not the best version of Andrew Moloney, but full credit to Joshua Franco. He deserved to win the title with his effort. He closed the fight strong, like a true champion. I’ll be back. One loss won’t define me.” source: top rank / espn broadcast

Christopher Diaz W10 Jason Sanchez... Christopher "Pitufo" Diaz (26-2, 16 KOs), from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, bested Jason Sanchez (15-2, 8 KOs) via ten-round unanimous decision. Official scores were 98-92 (twice) and 97-93 in a crossroads featherweight fight. Diaz has now won two in a row since an April 2019 decision loss to Shakur Stevenson. He has his sights set on a world title opportunity at either featherweight or junior featherweight. “I can fight at featherweight, or I can make 122 pounds. Whatever Top Rank wants, but I’m ready for a big fight in either weight division. I am a completely different and improved fighter from the one who fought Shakur Stevenson last year," Diaz said. “I worked on my power in the gym. My coaches, Nelson Rodriguez and Freddie Roach, got me ready for tonight.” source: top rank

Robert ParzÄ™czewski W8 Sladjan Janjanin... In Poland, super middleweight Robert ParzÄ™czewski (25-1) confidently beat Sladjan Janjanin of Bosnia on points. The Polish boxer sent his opponent  to the canvas several times, but could not knock him out. Janjanin is now 27-6. source: sport.onet.pl

Emanuel Navarrete KO6 Uriel Lopez ... Boxing's most active champion, Emanuel "Vaquero" Navarrete, keeps on rolling. Navarrete, the WBO junior featherweight champion, knocked out [unqualified] Uriel Lopez in the sixth round of a featherweight non-title bout on Saturday at TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City.It was the sixth victory in 13 months for Navarrete (32-1, 28 KOs), who upset Isaac Dogboe in December 2018 to win his world title. Lopez (13-14-1, 6 KOs) was game, but no match for Navarrete's swarming body attack. [Lopez has now lost four straight, hardly a legitimate opponent for a reigning champion]. Said Navarrete: "I have the utmost respect for Uriel Lopez. He put forth a courageous effort, but I was coming to win by knockout. I want to unify titles, but if nobody accepts my challenge, I'll move up to featherweight." source: top rank

THURSDAY JUNE 18, 2020

Gabriel Flores W10 Josrec Ruiz... Gabriel Flores Jr. won the first main event of his young career. The 20 year-old prodigy from Stockton, California, dominated his toughest opponent to date, cruising to a ten-round decision over Josec Ruiz of Honduras in the lightweight main event from the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Flores (18-0, 6 KOs) floored Ruiz in the second round and prevailed by three scores of 100-89 in his first scheduled ten-rounder. Ruiz (21-3-3, 14 KOs) saw his seven-bout winning streak come to an end. “He was a tough guy, but he was not on my level. Going 10 rounds for the first time in my career was a valuable learning experience," Flores said. “I see a world title in the next 12 months. That’s my goal, but we have to see what’s out there first. I’m training in Vegas now, and the sparring and training out here has helped elevate my game.”

Clay Collard W6 David Kaminsky... Former mixed martial artist Clay Collard may be boxing's best spoiler. Collard (7-2-3, 2 KOs) punished the previously undefeated David Kaminsky (6-1, 3 KOs) to win a six-round split decision. Kaminsky was taken to the hospital after the bout.Top Rank reporter Benardo Osuna tweeted "update on David Kaminsky is that all CT scans were negative. He remains under observation while his facial lacerations are being tended to." It was the third straight bout in which Collard handed a boxer his first pro loss. This time, the scores were 58-56 for Collard (twice) and [one very bad score of] 58-56 for Kaminsky. In the super middleweight showdown, Collard opened up a cut over Kaminsky's eye with a punch in the opening round. “I honestly thought he would hit harder. But once I felt his power, I pressed the action," Collard [listed as 14-7 in MMA] said. “I didn’t know if the cut came from a punch or a headbutt at first, but I knew being aggressive would be the key to victory. I was nervous when the cards were being read, but I felt I’d done more than enough to earn the decision.” source: top rank

TUESDAY JUNE 16, 2020

Mike Plania W10 Joshua Greer Jr. ... In the ESPN main event from Las Vegas, little-known Mike Plania of the Philippines got off to a fast start, catching and dropping the Top Rank-promoted Joshua Greer Jr. in the first round with a lead left hook. Another strong left from Plania caused Greer to touch the canvas for a second time round six. Greer bit down and closed the ten-round super bantamweight bout with two strong rounds while Plania played it safe. Some feared another bad decision, but the judges gave the visiting Plania a majority decision win by scores of 97-91, 96-92 and a shocking 94-94 from Dave Moretti. Plania, managed by Sean Gibbons, is now 24-1 with the only loss coming to former world title holder Juan Carlos Payano. Greer, who was being hyped as a future champion, falls to 22-2-1. source: top rank social media

Giovani Santillan W10 Antonio DeMarco... We have our first post-pandemic controversial decision. Welterweight Giovani Santillan improved to 26-0 when he edged former lightweight title holder Antonio DeMarco via majority decision. Official scores were 96-94 (twice) and 95-95. According to ESPN staff writer Ben Baby, "I had it 96-94 for DeMarco... judge Tim Cheatham scored rounds four through eight for Santillan despite the fact DeMarco landed a higher percentage of power punches in those rounds, per CompuBox. In the sixth and seventh rounds, DeMarco landed 54.2% of his power shots compared to 32.8% for Santillan." Usually reliable Steve Weisfeld turned in the other 96-94 scorecard. The sentiment on Twitter was overwhelmingly that DeMarco was robbed.  DeMarco (33-8-1, 24 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico is a 16 year-veteran who won the WBC Lightweight title with an eleventh-round stoppage over Jorge Linares.  He defended the title twice with stoppage victories over Miguel Roman and John Molina Jr. source: top rank social media

Bobirzhan Mominov W6 Cameron Krael... Kazakhstan's Bobirzhan Mominov (11-0, 8 KOs) outworked noted spoiler Cameron Krael (17-16-3, 4 KOs) to earn a unanimous decision in a six-round junior middleweight bout. Mominov was deducted a point for hitting behind the head in the sixth round. The scores were 57-56 and 58-55 (twice).

MONDAY JUNE 15, 2020

Khariton Agrba W10 Manuk Dilanyan ...Junior welterweight Khariton Agrba is someone to keep an eye on, as the 24 year-old easily defeated Manuk Dilanyan of Armenia on Monday in Moscow.  The Georgian-born Agrba shut out the more experienced Dilanyan, winning the ten-round bout by three scores of 100-90. Agrba, just 3-0, snapped Dianyan's seven-fight win streak. Dilanyan is now 11-4-1 overall. source: wba

FRIDAY JUNE 13, 2020

Mariusz Wach W10 Kevin Johnson ... Fighting in his home country of Poland, heavyweight Mariusz Wach (36-6, 19 KO) won a ten-round unanimous decision over Kevin Johnson of the United States. Official scores were 97-93, 98-92, and 99-91. Wach may have suffered a hand injury, saying afterwards that he could not feel his right hand for the last four rounds. Both men are 40 years old and pretty much lose every time they step up and fight true contenders. Having lost none of his last eleven bouts, Johnson's record drops to 34-17-1 with 18 KOs. source: sport.pl

Jack Culcay W12 Howard Cospolite ... In Berlin, junior middleweight Jack Culcay prevailed over France's Howard Cospolite on an Agon Sports show. After twelve rounds, Culcay won a unanimous decision by scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 118-110. Culcay was born in Equador but represented Germany in the 2008 Olympics. A world amateur champ in 2009, Culcay improved his pro record to 28-4 with 13 KOs. The 37 year-old Cospolite put up a respectable showing and returns home with a record of 18-8-3 with 6 KOs. source: espn deportes

Jessie Magdaleno DQ10 Yenifel Vicente ... There were fouls, multiple point deductions and knockdowns. But for featherweight Jessie Magdaleno, the win is all that mattered. Magdaleno prevailed over Yenifel Vicente via disqualification in the Top Rank on ESPN main event Thursday evening from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Magdaleno, a former WBO 122-pound champion, scored knockdowns in the first and fifth rounds, while Vicente had three points taken away for low blows in the fourth and another one in the tenth. At 1:38 of the tenth, referee Robert Byrd [finally and belatedly] disqualified Vicente due to repeated low blows. Magdaleno (28-1, 18 KOs) has won three in a row since losing his junior featherweight title in April 2018. Vicente (36-5-2, 28 KOs) has now lost two of his last three fights. Magdaleno, the WBC's #1 contender said, “Gary Russell [the WBC featherweight champion], I’m coming for you." source: top rank

Adam Lopez W10 Luis Coria...Thursday's ESPN telecast opened up with a great featherweight fight. Adam Lopez won via majority decision against Luis Coria in a ten-round fight that saw over 1500 punches exchanged. Lopez started out slowly in the first two rounds but came on in the middle rounds and barely carried the scorecards by totals of 96-94 (twice) and 95-95. Lopez was credited with outlanding Coria 259 punches to 175. Lopez, who is building a reputation as an all-action fighter, emerged from the battle with swelling around both eyes. Coming off a competitive loss in a WBO featherweight title challenge against Oscar Valdez, Lopez improves his pro record to 14-1. He is the son of the late Hector Lopez, a silver medalist at the 1984 Olympics. Coria is now 12-3 on his career. source: espn

TUESDAY JUNE 9, 2020

Shakur Stevenson KO6 Felix Caraballo... In the first major boxing match held since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, WBO featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson stopped Felix Caraballo of Puerto Rico in round six. The bout was a non-title event contested in the super featherweight division. Stevenson won every minute of the fight, scoring a first-round knockdown with a body punch, and landing repeated hard combinations. The end came in round six soon after a Stevenson low blow took a lot of steam out of Caraballo. A clean, well-placed combination to the body put Caraballo down for the count and in obvious distress. Stevenson, a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, now boasts a 15-0 pro record, which includes two wins in the World Series of Boxing. Stevenson may have suffered a left hand injury, but continued to throw the hand through the end of the fight. The question for Stevenson is whether he seeks a unification bout at featherweight or opts to stay at 130 pounds. If Stevenson is done at 126 pounds, he moves on with a title belt, but no signature win. (After Oscar Valdez vacated, Stevenson won the vacant WBO title against Joet Gonzalez and has yet to have an official defense). Caraballo saw a five-fight win streak snapped and falls to 13-2-2. source: espn

Jared Anderson TKO3 Johnnie Langston... In the ESPN  co-feature from Las Vegas, Jared Anderson punished Johnnie Langston for three rounds until the heavyweight contest was stopped. Anderson, only 20 years old, is a two-time United States amateur champion, and his pedigree showed. From Toledo, Ohio, he's now 4-0 with 4 KOs. Langston, a southpaw from Florida, gave an honest effort but was outgunned and tired quickly. He is now 8-3, but this was the first time he was stopped.  source: espn

Guido Vianello TKO1 Don Haynesworth... Heavyweight hopeful Guido Vianello of Italy stopped 294-pound Don Haynesworth in one round. The fight lasted all of 2:16. The 6'6" Vianello landed a chopping right hand that sent Haynesworth down. Haynesworth beat the count, but referee Jay Nady ended the fight, probably a premature stoppage. Vianello, a 2016 Olympian who is trained by 1984 Olympic silver medalist Kevin Barry, is listed at 7-0 with 7 KOs, but he was just 7-5 in another twelve pro bouts in the World Series of Boxing. Haynesworth, a 37 year-old who turned pro at age 31, heads home to New Rochelle, New York with a record of 16-4-1. source: espn

Robeisy Ramirez TKO1 Yeuri Andujar... Cuba's Robeisy Ramirez, who defeated Shakur Stevenson to capture Olympic gold in 2016, got an easy win over Yeuri Andujar (5-4) of the Dominican Republic. Ramirez scored two knockdowns en route to a first-round stoppage. That's now three wins since Ramirez was shocked by unheralded Adan Gonzalez last summer. Overall, Ramirez is 17-3 including pro bouts in the World Series of Boxing. source: espn deportes

FRIDAY JUNE 6, 2020

Carlos Molina TKO6 Michi Munoz... In the first Mexican boxing show since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, former IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina scored a technical knockout victory against 39 year-old Michi Muñoz. The show was promoted by Molina himself, who has an interesting back story. He came to the United States from Mexico as a very young boy. In 2013, he defeated Ishe Smith in 2013 for the vacant IBF title, but was soon deported back to Mexico from crimes he committed as a teenager. He is not permitted to fight in the United States, so he promotes his own shows in Mexico or serves as an opponent for up-and-coming Europeans. Against Munoz, Molina got his third consecutive win to improve to 32-11-2. Munoz (27-11-1) was not in good condition and showed signs of exhaustion starting in the fourth round. The junior middleweight contest was stopped in the sixth round. source: milenio.com
