Termite Watkins to receive BWAA award

Press Release: Maurice "Termite" Watkins is finally getting some much-deserved recognition for his contribution to the sport of boxing. Watkins is a former junior welterweight who once challenged Saoul Mamby for a world title.  However, he touched the lives of many more people well after his career as a boxer ended by going to Iraq and rebuilding a shattered amateur boxing program while the country was being ravaged by war. One of the eleven boxers in his charge made it to the 2004 Olympics, giving hope to Iraqis and showing them that many Americans truly cared about their country. The Boxing Writers Association of America announced today that Watkins will receive a special achievement award at the 80th annual awards dinner on May 6, 2005 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.  Watkins also has a book coming out, "Termite," co-authored with Suzy Pepper, which goes on sale April 19, 2005.
