The WBO Championship Committee has granted junior welterweight world champion Teofimo Lopez's request to be designated as WBO super champion. [Unlike the WBA, the WBO only recognizes one champion per division]. The WBO ruling grants Lopez the following main rights and privileges: (1) extended deadlines to complete mandatory defense obligations for the purpose of giving a super champion the opportunity or opportunities to unify the titles of more than one major sanctioning body; (2) if requested, the WBO may designate Lopez as the mandatory challenger for the immediate higher or lower weight division; and (3) if requested by Lopez after he has lost his title, if he wishes to fight for the title again, the Championship Committee may designate a former super champion as the mandatory challenger.
