Tanzanian update: Yona Segu to headline in Dar Es Salaam

Tanzania's Yona Segu (19-10-2) will host Malawi's Hannock Phiri (10-2) in a lightweight contrst on Friday April 9th at Ubungo Plaza in Dar Es Salaam. Originally scheduled for March 19th but postponed due to the passing of Tanzanian president John Magufuli, the fight, promoted by Mopao Entertainment, will be broadcast live by Azam TV. Segu (age 30) split two fights against South Africa's David Rajuili in September of 2018. Since then he has come up short against former WBO champion Terry Flanagan and Armenia's Vahram Vardanyan on away soil, but now he is ready to resurrect his career with a home win.

The Malawi national champion, Phiri (age 23) is an ambitious youngster who is returning to Tanzania for redemption after losing by split decision to Cosmas Cheka last September. Some, not surprisingly himself included, felt he deserved the victory on that night, so he has every intention of making a statement against Segu. With nine of ten victories coming inside the distance, he is certainly capable of hurting the local man if he connects. Segu vs. Phiri is one of eight bouts on a show billed “Fist of the Lions II”.
