Tank Davis ducks Roach in favor of Paul exhibition

It’s official: Boxing’s biggest disruptor, cruiserweight Jake “El Gallo de Dorado” Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) will fight an exhibition against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs). The bout will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and will stream live globally on Friday, November 14th, only on Netflix, included in all plans. [Davis is coming off a controversial draw against WBA junior lightweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. that most observers thought should have been a loss for Davis. It was assumed that Davis would fight Roach in a rematch but Davis has chosen this exhibition bout instead].

"Jake vs. Tank" is the culmination of four years of call-outs and a brewing rivalry between Paul, the sport’s most-watched fighter, who has redefined boxing promotion, and Davis, one of the most feared punchers in the sport.

Paul enters the bout almost exactly one year after headlining the largest boxing or MMA event in more than four decades, while Davis has the highest pay-per-view buys and revenue event of the past four years.

“Gervonta is an angry little elf who has been disrespecting my name for too long,” Paul told Netflix. “His nickname might be Tank, but I’m an FPV drone and I’m about to disable his ass. Yes, he is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. And I like my odds. First, I am going to kill David, then I will go on to slaughter Goliath, and you are all going watch me do it, breaking viewership records again. Atlanta. Friday, Nov 14th. The worst night of Gervonta's career, live only on Netflix.”

Davis has risen from the streets of West Baltimore to become one of boxing’s biggest stars and most feared punchers. Trained since childhood under longtime coach Calvin Ford, he turned pro at 18 and blasted through the lightweight ranks, capturing his first world title in 2017 at age 22, becoming the youngest reigning champion in the sport.

Since then, Davis has headlined sold-out arenas coast to coast, and delivered viral knockouts that made him a pay-per-view star. His 2020 finish of Leo Santa Cruz and 2023 stoppage of Ryan Garcia cemented his claim as “the face of boxing.”
