Sycuan Ringside Promotions still on a hot streak!

Like a young, promising fighter, Sycuan Ringside Promotions is amassing an impressive record while on its way to the top of its weight class – heavyweight among promoters. With five current world champions and a winning streak that dates back to March of 2005, Sycuan Ringside Promotions, which was launched during 2004, can be considered an emerging juggernaut in the sport of boxing.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions’ success continued Saturday at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino when World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez dramatically and successfully defended his title against Jhonny Gonzalez, undefeated Joan Guzman out boxed Jorge Barrios for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight crown and Jorge Paez Jr. edged Derrick Campos on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Vazquez rebounded from two early knockdowns to take command of the wildly entertaining fight and earn a 10th-round stoppage.  The fight instantly enters the derby for “Fight of the Year” honors.  With Sycuan Ringside Promotions’ World Boxing Council and lineal welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir in line for “Fighter of the Year” honors after stunning upsets of Zab Judah and Arturo Gatti and a meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Nov. 4, the San Diego-based promotional entity is garnering attention for “Promoter of the Year” kudos.

“We’re not just in this to make a quick splash; we’re in this for the long haul,” said Glenn Quiroga, President of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.  “Our goal is to become one of, if not the top promotional company in the sport, and this string of success only fuels our desire to get there.”

Both Guzman and Paez triumphed by decision.

“We didn’t think Guzman’s fight was remotely as close as the scorecards indicated, but he deserved and certainly will take the ‘W,’ ” said Scott Woodworth, Vice President of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.  “All in all, it was a great night for Sycuan – we successfully defended a world title, gained a world title and had a guy move a little closer to one day fighting for a world title.  And that’s what we’re all about – getting our boxers in position to succeed and, ultimately, become the best in their division.”

“I’m proud to have given the fans such a dynamic showing,” Vazquez said.  “If they want to call it ‘Fight of the Year,’ that’s their decision. But let me tell you, if I had a vote for promoter of the year, it’d be Sycuan.  Not just because of me, but because of the success they’ve had with all their boxers this year.  I don’t see anyone else who even comes close.”

“Sycuan continues to put me in the best possible position to succeed,” said Guzman.  “Winning another title is great, but this was just the first step in what I have always said I want to accomplish, and that’s letting America know that I am one of the best fighters in the world.”

The next fight on the Sycuan calendar is the HBO Pay-Per-View mega fight in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, pitting Baldomir and Mayweather Jr.

Joining Guzman, Vazquez and Baldomir in amassing that win streak is International Boxing Federation lightweight interim champion Julio Diaz.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions’ fifth current world champion is World Boxing Association super bantamweight interim champ Celestino Caballero.
