Stone announces Ruiz's retirement

By Scott Shaffer

At the post-fight press conference in Madison Square Garden, Norman Stone, the only manager John Ruiz has ever had, announced that Ruiz will retire from boxing. "Johnny's done. Farewell," said a tight-lipped Stone. Although Ruiz lost his WBA title to James Toney, his performance was more than credible and certainly didn't warrant retirement. Ruiz's attorney, Tony Cardinale said there was no hidden injury that spurred Stone's announcement, so no one should be surprised if Ruiz changes his mind after some time to reflect.  Even Don King did not seem totally convinced, saying, "This is a passionate moment. I always take these things in stride." If we have truly seen the last of Ruiz, his legacy will be that he always gave a great effort and got as much out of his talent as anyone in the sport. Remember where you heard it first! (12:50AM ET)
