WBC super bantamweight champion Skye Nicolson has been ruled out of the event scheduled for August 29th in Birmingham, England, due to an injury sustained during training. The Australian boxer was scheduled to face Japan's Miyo Yoshida to defend her title in one of the main events of the Most Valuable Promotions event. Nicolson issued the following statement: “I’m devastated to announce that, due to sustaining an injury in training last week, I have had to withdraw from my scheduled fight in Birmingham on Saturday, August 29. I’d like to sincerely apologise to Miyo Yoshida and her team for this delay. I have nothing but respect for Miyo and I’m looking forward to finally sharing the ring with her before the end of the year. The positive news is that while I’m recovering, I’ll be heading to Orlando this weekend for MVPW event, where I’m excited to support my fellow Australian world champions and many other incredible athletes. A new date for my fight with Yoshida will be locked in very soon, and I can’t wait to get back in the gym, back to full health, and back doing what I love. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and understanding.”
Nicolson became the WBC super bantamweight world champion in May of this year after the title became vacant. This is her second WBC world title. From 2024 to 2025, she was the featherweight champion of that organization.
Nicolson, age 30, was born and raised in Queensland, Australia to an English mother and Scottish father. She began boxing at age 12, following in the footsteps of her late brother. Her stellar amateur career saw over 150 fights around the world including a Commonwealth Games gold medal, bronze at the amateur world championships, and representing Team Australia in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she finished as a quarter-finalist. Off the back of the Olympics, she signed a long-term promotional deal with Matchroom and began a very active professional career that took her to her first world title in just her tenth professional fight, defeating Sarah Mahfoud for the WBC featherweight title in 2024. Now 16-1 as a professional, Nicolson rose to WBC interim champion at super bantamweight. Shortly after, the belt was vacated by former undisputed champion Ellie Scotney, and Nicolson was elevated to become a two-division champion in May 2026.
