ShoBox: Zuniga outslugs Oganov

Kirkland shines in co-feature

Fulgencio Zuniga TKO9 Victor Oganov... In a real slugfest, Fulgencio Zuniga was knocked down in the first round but dominated Victor Oganov for most of the next eight rounds until Oganov, out on his feet and trapped in a corner, was rescued by the referee. In the ShoBox main event from Tacoma, Washington, Zuniga proved himself to be a legitimate contender at 168 pounds (he also won the IBO belt) by ending Oganov's 26-fight knockout streak. Zuniga, 20-2-1, is a poor man's Edison Miranda, a Colombian who never stops punching. Oganov used a poor fight plan, coming forward continually but failing to beat Zunigato the punch. Anyone who calls this result an upset doesn't really understand that in boxing, its now how many wins you have but who you have fought. Oganov may have been unbeaten coming in, but he hadn't fought anyone near the caliber of the two men who have defeated Zuniga, Daniel Santos and Kelly Pavlik. Still, Oganov showed heart in winning the eighth round, and we know he has power, so after a few months rest, it will be interesting to see how he bounces back from this beating. source: ShoBox on Showtime

James Kirkland KO2 Mohammed Said... Middleweight prospect James Kirkland has been fighting and beating tough competition recently, but his spectacular knockout of Mohammed Said in Tacoma brought him to a new level. Now 20-0, Kirkland showed star quality in decking the normally-sturdy Said three times, twice in the first and once in the second for a ten count. He was just too fast and too powerful for Said, who was good enought to last the ten-round distance with Jerson Ravelo and drew over ten with Antwun Echols. The only concern for Kirkland was that he got hit solidly about two or three times by Said, 21-6-1. source: ShoBox on Showtime
