Promoter Gary Shaw has followed through on his promise to sue Ted Watley for defamation.  Shaw filed suit on Wednesday in a New York City federal court, alleging that Watley committed libel in a Boxingtalk interview when he accused Shaw of “ripping off” Mike Tyson by “shaking down” the promoter for the foreign television rights to Tyson’s last bout.  In papers filed by Shaw’s attorney, Judd Burstein, Watley was called “ a con man with an extensive 30+ year criminal record that includes a conviction within the last four months.”  Of course, having a criminal record does not mean Watley is guilty of libel, but Tyson’s manager, Shelly Finkel has also told Watley he intends to sue him.  Watley has been characterized as an advisor to Tyson, but as Greg Leon’s current story on Boxingtalk reveals, Watley was getting paid by Finkel from Finkel’s managerial share and the former champion didn’t seem to understand why Watley was ever brought aboard his management.
