Undefeated heavyweight Bowie Topou has signed an exclusive promotional deal with Gary Shaw Productions. A native of Tonga, Bowie, who is 6'2 and 270 pounds, is expected to make his U.S. debut later this summer.
Â
"Bowie is Tonga tough and that is why I signed him," said promoter Gary Shaw. "I can't wait to unleash him on the U.S. heavyweights. Bowie is going to get American boxing fans excited about the heavyweight division again."
Â
Bowie, whose real name is Suliasi Tupou Ahio, moved from Tonga to Australia at age 11.  Before becoming a boxer, Bowie played professional rugby league football in Australia for the Penrith Panthers.
Â
He made his pro debut last year and has fought exclusively in Australia under the tutelage of trainer Johnny Lewis. Looking to expand his professional horizons, Bowie (9-0, 7 KOs), moved to the U.S. at the end of 2006 and settled in Los Angeles where he trains with Justin Fortune at the Pound4Pound Gym.
Â
"I am thankful to Johhny for building a strong foundation upon which I could learn," said Bowie. "Coming to the U.S. and training with Justin and sparring with so many talented fighters has improved my boxing education and skills tremendously. I cannot wait to make my U.S. debut and measure myself against such a talented pool of fighters."
Â
A devout Mormon, Bowie, 24, is married to Georgia Tupou. He has a huge following among the Tongan Mormon community, the Tongan community in general and the Mormon community. He is managed by Richard Wilner, an attorney based in southern California.
