Senator cleared of ethical charges for taking free boxing passes

According to the Washington Post, Nevada Senator Harry Reid did not break any Senate rules when he accepted free ringside credentials to Las Vegas boxing matches, including Hopkins - De La Hoya, from the Nevada Athletic Commission during 2003-2005. The determination to clear Reid was made by the Ethics Committee. Reid was accused of wrongdoing because Senate rules bar senators from accepting gifts worth more than $50, but Reid said he was attending the boxing events as part of his work on a proposed national boxing commission, which passed the Senate but was rejected the House of Representatives.  Although cleared of wrongdoing, Reid has said he wont take any more free credentials. Senator John McCain, who pushed the hardest for the boxing reform, also went to certain boxing matches, but unlike Reid, he paid to get in. -Scott Shaffer
