Russians dominate amateur tournament in Bulgaria

The Russian national team emphasised their dominance of European amateur boxing as eleven of their boxers marched into the finals in each and every weight categories at the European Senior Championships by winning their semi-final matches in Bulgaria on Friday. Ireland's Kenneth Egan was one of the men who lost to a Russian foe, bowing out against Artur Beterbiev. All eleven Russians, who are guaranteed no worse than silver medals, will be determined to land gold and surpass the Russians medal haul of nine golds from the 2004 European Championships in Croatia. The 36 years and over European Championships will conclude on Sunday in the ancient medieval town of Plovdiv. Forty two nations were competing in Bulgaria. The European Championships are held every two years.
