Gary Antonio Russell W12 Victor Santillan.... In just his third fight since his lone defeat in October 2022, Gary Antonio Russell captured the interim WBA super bantamweight title via unanimous decision against Victor Santillan of the Dominican Republic. At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Russell, 121.2 lbs., of Capitol Heights, MD, was the busier fighter throughout, landing flurries of punches on the inside. Santillan, 121.6 lbs., pressed forward for much of this battle of southpaws, but could not keep up with Russell’s pace. Russell, now 22-1 with 13 KOs, punctuated his victory with a twelfth-round knockdown, catching Santillan with a counter right hook to the chin. The scores were 119-108 (twice) and 118-109. Suffering his first loss outside of Japan, Santillan saw his record drop to 16-3 with 7 KOs. While Russell claimed his first title, Naoya Inoue remains the undisputed super bantamweight world champion and has been since 2023.
