Russell stops Martinez on cuts

Gary Russell Jr. TKO5 Kiko Martinez... WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. (30-1, 18 KOs) had Kiko Martinez (39-9, 28 KOs) on missile lock from round one.  Russell’s marksmanship was on display, his speed was blinding, and his level of superiority was as apparent as the blood on Martinez’s face by round three.  A former IBF 122-pound title holder, Martinez’s veteran savvy was apparent in its own right, as he did have fleeting moments of success.  While never shaking Russell with any single punch, Martinez landed some good body punches. Those brief moments of Martinez's success showed the makings of an interesting fight should it reach the final few rounds.  But long before that might have materialized, the action was stopped when referee Ricky Gonzalez asked the ringside doctor to check out the rather large cut on under what used to be Martinez’s left eyebrow.  Russell’s dominant performance came to a halt at 2:52 of round five when the doctor instructed Gonzalez to end things.  After the win, Russell expressed a passionate desire to face Leo Santa Cruz, stating that should that fight not materialize, he would be forced to move up in weight for a potential showdown with either WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis or WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt. Source: Showtime
