On Saturday, Universum won a WBA purse bid to stage a heavyweight elimination bout between one its own boxers, Ruslan Chagaev and John Ruiz, a two-time former WBA titlist. However, Ruiz has now filed a protest with the WBA because, according to Ruiz’s attorney, Universum is trying to violate the terms of the bid. According to longtime Ruiz attorney Anthony Cardinale, the winner of the purse bid is not permitted to stage the fight any sooner than 45 days from the bid. Universum has announced on its website that it will hold the fight on October 28, 2006 in Stuttgart, Germany. The other date mentioned by Universum at the time of the purse bid was November 18 in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Cardinale intends to make Universum wait until November. “The first date is invalid and we are insisting that the fight take place within the rules,” Cardinale told Boxingtalk, explaining that Ruiz wants a proper amount of time to train. “We did not agree and will not agree to October 28. There is no way we are going to take any time that’s less than what’s in the rules.”
