Roy Jones Jr wants to fight Joe Calzaghe at 168 ASAP

Lays out terms of potential deal exclusively on Boxingtalk

Last night former pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr told Boxingtalk.com that his plans for a June 9 PPV date are close to being changed to a July 14 PPV in the Gulf Coast. Jones told us that his offer to Anthony Hanshaw still stands, but after watching Joe Calzaghe's win over Peter Manfredo Jr, the King of Cardiff seems capable of changing RJ's plans. "I don't like how that fight made my country look. I don't like what I saw and it pissed me off because HBO is doing that for him and they're not doing that for me, so that makes me want to kick his ass." You don't want to miss what else his Royness had to say as he details just what it would take for he and Calzaghe promoter Frank Warren to make a Calzaghe-Jones fight a reality.

GL: Are you thinking about fighting him over there?

Roy Jones Jr: "Nah, I ain't talking about going over to fight him in England. But it just really got to me."

GL: Why because of the way they made the American kid look?

RJJ: "Yeah and he's not known for being an American boxer like that and then they took him over there and made him look horrible. That makes us look bad and it pisses me off that they want us to look like that. Just make the deal right, come over here and I'll go down to 168 for him you know where I'm coming from? He don't have to worry about making 175, I'll go down to 168 for him. Watching that fight upset me, I don't watch too many fights but what I saw the other day upset me."

GL: And you would fight him at 168 in your next fight?

RJJ: "I sure would. If they make the right deal where I could get parity in this country, he could keep whatever he's used to making in his country, he could make that. But anything over than what he's used to getting should be 50-50 after that because that means that has something to do with what I add to this table. In this country he should ge parity because they don't know him, but everyone knows me. If he's used to getting $2M in his country he can have that. If he's used to getting $4M in his country he can have that, whatever it is. Anything over what he's used to getting and I want 50% and there it is, that's the fight. I ain't been down to 168 in I don't know how many years, but I'd go down there for him."

GL: Does wanting to move the date of your next fight from June 9 to July 14 have anything to do with the fact that Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah will fight on HBO PPV that night?

RJJ: "Yeah, because that's a good PPV fight and I think it would be a good idea to move it to July which is a better date. I'm never trying to hurt the sport. But I really don't like what I saw this weekend."

GL: So if something can happen with Calzaghe you're ready for that immediately, if not you're offer to Anthony Hanshaw still stands...

RJJ: (cutting in) "Yeah, that still stands the only thing I could say is if I can fight Calzaghe before that that's what it's going to be. If not I'll fight Hanshaw."

GL: Does Roy Jones Jr defeating Joe Calzaghe before September change the terms of the potential fight with Jermain Taylor?

RJJ: "Nah, I would still do it for 50-50 and move right on. I should have something for you in the next few days so we'll see what's happening.
