ShoBox may be next for junior welterweight contender
Timothy Bradley W10 Miguel A. Vazquez... Junior welterweight contender Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley Jr. pounded out a ten-round unanimous decision over Miguel Angel Vazquez Friday night in Corona, California. The bout headlined Thompson Boxing’s “Thunder and Lightning” event at Omega Products International. He turned in a workmanlike performance in his final defense, winning by scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 98-92. Vazquez, competing outside of Mexico for the first time, came to fight.
Bradley calmly applied pressure to the taller Vazquez, looking for openings to get inside and rip his combinations. Vazquez had some good moments when the two exchanged early in the bout, but Bradley settled into his groove by about the 4th round, finding spots to work pretty combinations to the head and body.
By the sixth, the body punches were clearly showing a toll on Vazquez, who hung in there gamely and staged a mini-rally in the eighth round. Bradley finished strong and later said he felt sluggish during the bout.
“I had a hard time getting going,” he said. “I was trying to land body shots, he kept leaning to his left. He’s a good fighter. I take nothing from him; he came to win.”
“I’m trying to be a little more patient and set up the power shots. I was breaking him down slowly. I think I gave the fans a show tonight.” Bradley, who will turn 24 next month, retained his WBC Youth title for the final time, having outgrown the WBC's Youth division.
Thompson Boxing matchmaker Alex Camponovo confirmed after the bout Bradley is scheduled to appear on a Shobox card September 7, 2007 in Santa Ynez, California. No opponent had been finalized as of Friday night.
Eric Fields KO1 Ramiro Reducindo... In a battle of former amateur standouts, Eric “Danger” Fields Jr. knocked out former Mexican Olympian Ramiro Reducindo in the first round of their scheduled six round cruiserweight bout. Fields improves to 7-0 with 6 KOs. Reducindo’s ledger now stands at 8-2 with 5 KOs.
Fields started fast, quickly putting Reducindo on the defensive. A pair of body shots followed by a right upstairs sent Reducindo down for the count. Official time was 1:39. After the bout, Fields, a two-time National Golden Gloves winner, was understandably pleased with his effort.
“This was the type of fight I wanted,” Fields said. “I figured I was stronger, I was just throwing my hands.”
“He’s a bad boy,” said manager Whit Haydon. Haydon said the phone is ringing “off the hook” with calls from promoters about the 25-year-old Ardmore, Oklahoma, native.
Ivan Stovall W8 Ernesto Castaneda... Local favorite Ivan Stovall, fighting out of nearby Pomona, made it 6 consecutive wins with a unanimous points verdict over Sacramento journeyman Ernesto Castaneda in the super middleweight co-feature. All three judges had it 80-70 for Stovall, who scored knockdowns in the 5th and 8th rounds. Stovall improves to 9-1 with 6 KOs, while Castaneda slips to 8-11-2 with 2 KOs.
Obed Parmatz KO4 Misael Martinez... Obed Parmatz made an impressive pro debut, breaking down Misael Martinez en route to a final round stoppage in their junior bantamweight bout. The Oxnard native showed good poise and a solid body attack, ripping left hooks to the midsection of Martinez in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. After a Parmatz flurry had Martinez in trouble in the 4th, the bout was halted by referee David Denkin at the 1:25 mark. Martinez vomited in his corner afterwards, and was taken by stretcher to nearby Riverside Memorial Hospital according to a Thompson Boxing official. Martinez is now 0-4.
Jesus Barelleza KO2 Ryan Davis... Jesus Barelleza proved too much for Ryan Davis in a battle of debuting light heavyweights. A short left hook on the inside hurt the southpaw in the first, and Barelleza ended matters in the second with a left-right combo with Davis on the ropes. Davis slumped to the canvas after referee Jose Cobian waved off the bout. Official time was 1:36.
