Boxingtalk caught up with former two time world champion Ricardo Mayorga moments after he and Fernando Vargas traded blows at the Los Angeles press conference to announce their September 8 battle on Showtime PPV. You don't want to miss what the Nicaraguan Madman had to say in this must see exclusive interview.
Being that you are a three time world champion, what does going into this fight with Vargas mean to you? "This is a very important fight for me because winning the fight opens the door for another world title fight. I don't have to motivate myself or get too pumped up for Vargas because I know he has nothing left. I know what he has to offer and I'm going to do what I need to do to win this fight."
Q: How has training been going and who have you been training with?
Ricardo Mayorga: "For two months I've been training with Lee Sloan and we've been working on the basics of boxing, which is the speed bag, the heavy bag, running, calisthenic and cardiovascular work."
DN: Ricardo can you explain what happened at the press conference?
RM: I just came to do the promotion of the fight, I tried to keep order as you all saw when I was referring to Ms. Duva, but he escalated it to another level and it was unprofessional on his part."
DN: So he was the one who threw the first punch?
RM: "I can't tell you who threw the first blow, but I can tell you what's going to happen inside that ring on September 8, it's going to be a different outcome."
DN: How will this fight be different from your fight with De La Hoya?
RM: "This isn't going to be the same fight, this is going to be a different fight. I'm going to be who is going to be attacked and I'm going to attack him so I'm going to be ready for him. I'm going to hit him so hard that he's not even going think his mother hit him hard when he was a child."
DN: Does Vargas saying he's going to retire after his fight benefit you?
RM: "He has more miles on him than an old pickup truck and I'll prove it on September 8. He's a fat old lady ready for retirement. Not even the maid in my house is fatter than him."
DN: The last time you fought at 160 or above came against Felix Trinidad, how will this fight differ from that one?
RM: "YOu can't compare a thoroughbred with a donkey, you can't compare Felix Trinidad to Fernando Vargas so let's just skip that question. Trinidad was a super champion and this guy is a nobody, they're not even worth mentioning in the same sentence."
DN: What makes you think he's scared to fight you?
RM: "I just talk facts when I won the WBC title at 154 pounds instead of him stepping in the ring with me, he went to the WBC and tried to have them strip my title."
DN: What is your prediction for the fight?
RM: "Two rounds. Two rounds. As much as he's going to want to run away from me he's only going to last two rounds."
