GL: Can you give us some thoughts on your September 15 fight with Fernando Vargas and the altercation that took place at the first press conference? "I'm extremely motivated for this fight, especially after him and all of his goons tried to jump on me. I'm definitely looking forward to knocking his head off."
GL: I spoke with Vargas after the first press conference and he basically said that Vargas has the mental edge over Mayorga based on that first altercation. Has he successfully gotten under your skin?Ricardo Mayorga: "I don't know or care about his comments, but I don't get paid for kicking his ass until we get in the ring so that's what I'm going to wait for."
GL: You've made it clear that you want to return to welterweight, this fight is taking place at 162 pounds, does that put you at a disadvantage?RM: "Nah, I don't think it puts me at a disadvantage, I'm not facing a true middleweight. I'm not facing a fighter who is on top of his game, so I definitely don't think it puts at a disadvantage at all."
GL: De La Hoya, Trinidad and Mosley have all knocked Vargas out, can we expect to see a similiar result on September 8?RM: "Not only that, but I think I'm going to be able to knock him out in two rounds."
GL: If you don't beat Vargas would you consider retirement?RM: "If I can't beat a shot bum like Fernando Vargas, I'm retiring. That's a promise to you and all of the fans. I'm not worth shit if I can't beat Vargas."
GL: So you're definitely viewing this fight as do or die so you can make a splash at welterweight?RM: "That's why I want to knock him out in two rounds, I do want to make that splash, and like I said if I can't beat a bum like Vargas it doesn't make much sense to keep fighting."
GL: Everyone knows you make for exciting fights, everyone knows you know how to promote an event, when will you learn how to add new facets to boxing game? Don't you think that will make you a more dangerous fighter?RM: "Wait until September 8 so I can show you what I've been working on as I score a huge knockout. I'm going to be on top of my game."
GL: Who will be training you for this fight and where will you be training?RM: "Luis Leon and Orlando Cuellar will be training me and I'll be working in South Florida."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?RM: "I want to thank all of my fans for supporting on, on September 8 I'm finishing Vargas off in style."
