Reyes beats Leon in tough fight

By Scott Shaffer

Daniel Reyes, a former Olympian and former 105-pound world title holder, survived a tougher-than-expected encounter with journeyman Valentin Leon. Although Leon was 0-9-2 in his last eleven bouts, Reyes found himself on the canvas in the second round. He was more off-balance than hurt, but Leon was landing plenty of big shots. Reyes scored with many shots of his own, so the junior flyweight bout was exciting and surprisingly competitive.  Leon was down in the fifth from what appeared to be a low blow-uppercut combination that was counted as a knockdown. In the sixth, Reyes' superior size, skill and reach finally overcame Leon, who was knocked down again and then found himself getting pounded against the ropes when the referee stopped the bout. Reyes, who held the IBF title from 2003-2004 halted a two-bout losing streak to improve to 35-3-1, but his best days are probably behind him. source: Telemundo
