Middleweights and Light Heavyweights begin competiton

Shawn Estrada, the United States' middleweight representative, has advanced in the first round of the Beijing Olympics by defeating Ezequiel O. Maderna of Argentina by a score of 10-2... Bakhtiyar Artayev of Kazakhstan, who won the gold medal in 2004 at welterweight, also advanced in the middleweight competition. Artayev beat Said Rachidi of Morocco, 8-2. After winning the gold in 2000, Artayev moved up to middleweight where he won the bronze at the 2007 world amateur championships... Matvey Korobov, a two-time world amateur champion, topped Sweden's Naim Terbunja 18-6....Still in the middleweight class, Emilio Correa, Jr. started off the Cuban team with a win when he defated Australia's Jarrod Fletcher, 17-4. Correa, who won the Pan Am gold in 2007, is the son of Cuba's 1972 Olympic gold medalist, Emilio Correa, Sr... Russia's Artir Beterbiev, a silver medalist at last year's world amateur championships, advanced in the light heavyweight division with a 15-3 win over Sweden's Kennedy Katende... In the same weight class, Puerto Rico's Carlos Negron Colon dominated Medi Ghorbani of Iran 13-4... Also at light heavy, Samoa's Farani Tavui was carried out on a stretcher after getting knocked out in the third round by Marijo Sivolija-Jelica..   source: official olympic website /si.com
