Ira Terry, Adam Richards post victories
On Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Fitzgeralds Hotel & Casino, in Tunica, Mississippi, Prize Fight Promotions continued with another sell-out crowd. What would make an even bigger headline is if Prize Fight Promotionsdidn't have a sellout crowd.
Ty Barnett KO1 Anthony Cobb... The night started off with junior welterweight Ty Barnett (12-0 with 9 KOs) defeating Anthony Cobb (4-35-3). Barnett has the same coach as the Peterson Brothers, Barry Hunter. He wasted no time taking his game right to Cobb. Barnett threw direct, precise punches with bad intentions and as soon as the body attack started, the fight was over. A body punch ended the fight at 2:01 of round one.
Chris Howard TKO3 Ken Humphrey... The second fight of the evening featured one of Prize Fights' newest signings, Chris “The Hurricane” Howard (3-0 with 1 KO) . Howard electrified the crowd in his Prize Fight Debut in October, and he didn't disappoint Saturday night either. Howard demonstrated speed and proved he can bang as well. Howard would send his opponent, Ken Humphrey (4-7 with 3 KOs) to the canvas with multiple body shots, and it was lights out at 27 seconds of round three.
Fernando Guerrero TKO2 Derrick Douglas... Prize Fight's newest prospect, Fernando Guerrero (out of Hal Chernoff's gym in Maryland) matched up against Derrick Douglas. Both fighters made their pro debuts, and Guerrero emerged victorious. Guerrero, who went to the Olympic tirals, was a little bit anxious early on, but loosened up quickly by the end of the first round. Douglas was an opponent that did a lot of grabbing and holding. Fernando's body attack and power proved too much, and this one was over at 1:22 of round two. Guerrero hurt Douglas with a big punch, and Douglas didn;t seem to want to continue, so the referee stopped the bout.
Jermell Charlo W4 Corey Somerville ... Jermell Charlo made is pro debut against Corey Somerville (1-1). Charlo was clearly the more talented fighter and cruised to a four-round unanimous decision by scores of 40-35 (twice) and 39-35.
Ira Terry W8 Robbie Cannon ... The fight of the night clearly went to lightweight prospects Ira Terry (18-0 with 11 KOs) and Robbie Cannon (10-1 with 6 KOs). This fight was a war from the beginning to the end. Early on Cannon was successful with his jab, and because of that he won the first few rounds. Terry dug down deep late in the eight-rounder to take a well-deserved victory. Make no mistake about it, Cannon came to fight and this was a close fight with Terry needing the last two rounds to pull away. Terry landed the more effective power shots throughout the fight, and when the going got tough, he did what he had to do to get the victory. A rematch between these two wouldn't disappoint the fans!
Adam Richards TKO5 Maurice Wheeler ... The feature bout of the evening matched up local fan favorite Adam “Swamp Donkey” Richards (20-1 with 14 KOs) against Maurice Wheeler (10-11 with 1 KO). Early on, this fight was tough to watch. Wheeler grabbed, held and hit while the ref was breaking them, and wouldn't listen to the referee's instructions. The referee took a point away from Wheeler in the second round for excessive grabbing, and not obeying referee commands. Give credit to Wheeler, though, because he started to actually fight after the second round, and showed some toughness. Richards on the other hand, was tougher than Wheeler. He used a beautiful body attack that wore the big Wheeler down, and eventually it took its toll. Wheeler wouldn't get off of his stool to answer the bell for the sixth round. Trained by Ronnie Shields, Richards is looking to make a big step up in opponents in his next fight, and looks to get back in the ring sometime in January.
